Ashton
kept up their dreams of promotion with a workmanlike performance in
trying conditions in overcoming a resilient Adlington outfit, the match
finishing in a blizzard. As expected Ashton piled the pressure on
early and after a great marauding run from the tireless Kieran Spruce,
it was left to Matty Melling to weave his way through the home defence
to score. The one thing coach Steve Jones (Arker) had mentioned before
the game then set in, Complacency. With this the home side hit back
scoring twice before normal service was resumed when the hard running
Joey Burrows took the ball some twenty yards out to burst his way over.
Ashton
started brightly in the second half and following a great passage of
play from the forwards it was left to David Ames to give a beautiful
inside ball to the willing Matty Melling, who went in under the post. A
fine break from Dave Picton down the right pulled in the defence and
when Ashton switched the ball quickly to the left, Peter Shaw was on
hand to score. Aldington hit back again before man of the match, Dave
Picton took the ball in his own half and jigged his way through the
defence, dummying several players on his way to a wonderful try. Peter
Shaw rounded off the scoring after some fine interplay. Matty Melling
was successful with three conversions.
