Ashton
Bears put their Lancashire Final defeat behind them and got back to the
league where they enjoyed an emphatic victory over a spirited Adlington
outfit on a gluepot of a pitch. It was as early as the first minute
when after a great burst down the middle from John Winder, Alex Peet
was on hand to scoot over the line. Following a fine passage of play
Dave Picton released a superb ball to the impressive Kieron Spruce who
raced 45 yards through the heart of the defence to score. Ashton
wouldn’t be drawn into a forward battle and following another
sweeping move across the park, it was the ever willing Matty Melling
who went over in the corner. A strong smart break down the left from
Steve Smith dragged the defence in, and when the ball was quickly
passed to the opposite wing, again Matty Melling was on hand to score.
The pressure was relentless from Ashton and just on half time a
fabulous cut out pass from Dave Picton saw the ball end up in the hands
of young Chris Rothwell who eased it at the corner.
The second half saw much of the
same and it wasn’t long before a neat little inside ball from Chris
Rothwell, when he looked to be running out of room, to Man of the Match
Andy Bailey crash over the line. Ashton were keeping the ball alive and
really playing some good rugby which weren’t in keeping with the
conditions and it was after another fine passage of play that the
tireless Peter Shaw came up with his first of the day. Tries were
coming thick and fast now and great off load from Alex Peet allowed
Danny Parkinson to go over. Peter Shaw was next to score when he
latched onto another inside ball from Chris Rothwell. The loose forward
completed his hat trick when he pounced on a loose ball to score
unopposed. The final try showed how much Ashton wanted to win; when in
the final minute the ball went through several pairs of hands and end
up with a deserved try for Scott Hughes. Matty Melling superbly
converted nine of the tries.
