Playing
on a very narrow pitch it looked like it would be a game dominated by
forward play; however Ashton and especially man of the match Steven
Naylor had other ideas. After the initial forward battle in the middle
of the park it was Ashton who used a power play on the last tackle, and
after some good close passing young Steven Naylor went over in the
corner. Burtonwood had a period of pressure, but when the ball was
dropped close to the Ashton line Steven Naylor pounced on the loose
ball and raced the full length of the pitch to score. A brilliant
defence splitting inside ball from Dave Picton allowed the impressive
Peter Shaw to burst through the home defence, only to be tackled just
short of the line, but a quick play saw the ball find its way the
Steven Naylor who graciously accepted his third of the day.
The second half was only minutes old when Steven Naylor this time
intercepted the ball to race the length of the field again. With the
result not in doubt Ashton were in complete control and it wasn’t
long before Steven Naylor scored his fifth of the day when he received
a superb pass from Brent Knox.
The
winger would be the first to admit that the work his forwards get
through makes it a lot easier for himself and the rest of the backs.
Again
Matty Melling showed what a great asset he his to the side with an
immaculate day in the loose and with the boot, converting all five
tries.
