Ashton
Bears did well to overcome a much improved and confident
Folly Lane
side even with a depleted squad, which underlines just how important
the formation of a second team has been this season. Ashton had to soak
up some early pressure from the visitors who have just won four out of
their last five starts, but when man of the match, Dave Picton decided
to run at the defence, he broke through and passed a neat ball to the
willing Chris Rothwell, who is growing in stature every week, who
scored under the posts. Both defences were on top in the quagmire of a
pitch; and it took another brilliant piece of individuality, when Matty
Melling took the ball at first receiver and ghosted one way then
another to score.
When Folly Lane hit back with two tries in the second half, it was time
for Ashton to dig deep and with the forwards, especially Peter Shaw and
Brent Knox starting to make ground and big hits, it seemed only a
matter of time before they scored and when they stretched the defence
with a move from one side of the field to the other, it was Paul Murphy
who squeezed in at the corner. Suddenly the whole team was lifted and
when big Keiron Spruce made half a break and off loaded, there were
some great hands from Andy Bailey and Dean Prescott, who did really
well to pass to Brent Knox, who was steaming up on the outside to score
a fine try.
Matty
Melling was successful with three conversions.
