Ashton
proved what a tremendous squad they have got together. With six lads
missing from their last game, they overwhelmed Halton Farnworth 52-0 to
reach the last four of the Lancashire Cup. As expected the game was
tight early on and it took a clever kick by Dave Picton for in form
winger Steven Naylor to out- jump the defence and score. Shortly after
a good move from the base of the scrum saw Man of the match, Peter Shaw
put Steven Naylor in for his second. Ashton were starting to dominate
and with Alex Peet, impressive with his trade mark runs, it wasn’t
long before Phil Collier burst over. Peter Shaw was next on the score
sheet when he latched on to the ball to race over.
Ashton started the second half strongly and it was Andy Bailey who
benefitted from a good move again created from Peter Shaw. Dave Picton
was at his best when he pounced on a loose ball to dart over. A strong
break from Alex Peet, followed by swift hands allowed Peter Shaw to
grab his second. Dave Hughes was on the end of a move were Ashton just
kept the ball alive. A neat little chip from Stuart Millett enabled
Steven Naylor to complete the scoring and grab himself a second
successive hat trick. Matty Melling again was outstanding at full back,
bagging another eight conversions.
