Bears made the short journey to Wigan St Jude’s and ended up with a
share of the spoils. Early on in the first half Ashton missed two or
three clear cut chances to take the lead, however it was Jude’s who
opened the scoring with a try in the corner. Ashton kept up the
pressure with darting runs from man of the match, Alex Peet, ably
assisted from fellow forwards, Keiron Spruce, Neil Ireland and John
Hughes, but it was Jude’s who increased their lead with a penalty.
Again Ashton came back at the home side and it took a great tackle to
stop Brent Knox from going over.
The game seemed to swing Ashton’s way when the impressive Matty
Melling unfortunately had to go off injured, but his replacement, Peter
Shaw, with his first touch of the ball made half a break and slip it to
Steven Naylor, who graciously received the ball to race seventy yards
to score under the posts. Dave Picton converted, Ashton were now fully
in control and it wasn’t long before they took the lead, when an
inspirational break from the tireless Brent Knox made an opening for
Dave Shaw to score. With minutes remaining Jude’s equalised, but
Ashton still looked like they could win it when young Chris Rothwell
scythed through the home defence only to be stopped yards short of the
line and with the last play of the match, Stuart Millett narrowly
missed with a drop goal attempt.
