Ashton
Bears overcame the latest hurdle in their quest for the 1st Division
title, with a hard fought win against local rivals, St Jude’s. Ashton
started much the better of the two teams and following a succession of
penalties, Matty Melling opened the scoring with two points. Ashton
piled on the pressure and following a ten metre scrum Peter Shaw was
held up inches from the line, Matty Melling took the ball at acting
half back to scoot over the line. He converted his own try. With man of
the match, Alex Peet controlling the ruck area it wasn’t long before
Ashton added to their lead. The tireless Dave Picton threw a wonderful
cut out pass to the ever improving Chris Rothwell, who graciously took
the ball and place it under the sticks, again Matty Melling converted.
Ashton rounded off a great first half when a cross field passing move,
going through several pairs of hands, found Paul Murphy, who did really
well to go in at the corner.
The game as a contest was sealed early in the second half when, from a
similar move to the try just before halftime, Paul Murphy was the
recipient again.
The game
became a stop start affair after this and although Jude’s pulled a
couple of tries back, Ashton always seemed to have enough in reserve.
Matty
Melling, Chris Rothwell and Paul Murphy, all names for the future, are
starting to show why the coaches have much faith in them, all having
fine games.
