Ashton's
first away game of the new campaign went without a hitch as the Bears
defeated Latchford on their own patch 4-44. Ashton's first try game
from Neil Island on 10 minutes and was followed shortly after by Steven
Naylor. Latchford's defence and Ashton's attack took a back step for
the next 25 minutes until Dave Picton grabbed the first of his brace of
tries on 33 minutes and Peter Shaw scored just before the half time
whistle with a typical powerhouse Shaw try.
The
second half followed a similar pattern with Dave Picton scoring on 48
minutes. Man of the match Matty Melling, playing on the wing, went over
a few minutes later and he was followed not long after by Danny
Parkinson. Paul Roberts completed the scoring for Ashton on 77 minutes
and the Bears travelled home happy after putting in 8 tries on
conceding just the one. Matty Melling kicked 6 goals from 8 attempts to
make the scoreline seem even more impressive.
