An
unusually out of sorts Ashton Bears succumbed to their first defeat of
the season when they lost to a much improved Latchford outfit 16-22. It
started badly for the Bears when Latchford intercepted to score. This
seemed to wake Ashton up and a period of sustained pressure allowed
debutant Chris Flemming to ease in at the corner. The game was then
turned on its head from an Ashton point of view when two speculative up
and under’s resulted in two tries for the visitors. With what seemed
a mountain to climb, Man of the match, Dave Picton, then produced a bit
of magic to put Steve Smith in.
10-16
down at half time and a stiff talking to from the coaches saw Ashton
show some character and with the forwards starting to make ground,
especially Kieron Spruce and Neil Ireland, it looked as if Ashton could
and would turn it round, however after a period of sustained pressure
from Ashton, it was Latchford who broke away to score. Ashton turned
the heat up again and another debutant, Chris Rothwell did well to go
in at the corner after the ball had gone swiftly through several pairs
of hands. Matty Melling converted of the two tries.
