Playing a
team that took four points of them last year, Ashton Bears were well
aware the danger Widnes Moorfield posed for them. However with their
early season form and obvious determination they were not in the mood
to let any of it slip. They were soon on the score sheet when winger
Steven Naylor scored after a good break from Andy Bailey. The
industrious Dave Picton then put Peter Shaw over with a great pass.
Ashton were starting to enjoy the afternoon sunshine and just before
halftime a beautifully weighted cross field kick from Dave Picton
allowed Steven Naylor to out jump the defence to score.
Man of the match Stuart Millett put Peter Shaw in for his second after
good work from Joey Burrows. He completed his hat trick shortly after
as the result of some good passing. A superb break from Dave Picton set
up the next try from Steve Smith. Ashton were now fully in control,
with full back Matty Melling, again in fine form with the boot and in
open play. The next try came directly from a scrum when Peter Shaw went
down the blind side, enabling Steven Naylor to complete his hat trick.
Brent Knox completed the misery for Moorfield when he finished off a
great passage of passing.
