Ashton
Bears clinched the first division title with an emphatic and thoroughly
professional performance against a dogged
Oldham
outfit 28-8.
Ashton
got off to the start they wanted when, after a quick tap penalty, the
ball was passed out to John Hughes who outstripped the home defence to
race 65 meters to the line. The try seemed to settle Ashton’s nerves
and it wasn’t long before the impressive Alex Peet broke the line
again and slip the ball to the ever willing Matty Melling who scored
under the posts and duly converted. However, with the last play of the
half
Oldham
hit back.
Ashton took control again early in the second half when good work from
Dave Picton, Chris Rothwell and Scott Hughes combined to put Peter Shaw
through a yawning gap in the home defence. An Oldham penalty couldn’t
dampen the Ashton lad’s resolve and with man of the match, Kieran
Spruce leading the pack along with Kevin Howells and Brent Knox, it
wasn’t long before Ashton stretched their lead when Alex Peet made
another great break, Matty Melling supported and slipped the ball to
Dave Picton, who raced under the posts. Again Matty Melling converted.
Matty Melling added a penalty before he wrapped up the win and the
title when he took a wonderful inside pass from Alex Peet, to round up
a fantastic season for the Bears.
