With six
debutants in their opening match, Ashton were determined to start this
season on a winning note. As expected both defences were on top in the
early exchanges. Ashton took the lead with two penalties from Matty
Melling. Ashton were starting to gain momentum and with strong
determined runs from Kieran Spruce, good handling and distribution from
Stuart Millett, the inevitable try came from Peter Shaw with one of his
trademark bursts.
Oldham hit back straight after half time, however it wasn’t long
before Ashton re-gained the initiative when, after some great cross
field passing, Paul Wilde broke through the flagging defence. Again
Oldham
hit back to equalise on the hour mark. Ashton then seemed to up the
tempo and all the hard pre-season training came into effect. After
sustained pressure on the
Oldham
line, Matty Melling went over. This was followed shortly after when
Steven Naylor latched onto a great off load from man of the match,
Peter Shaw, to race under the sticks. Dave Picton converted. The game
and points were wrapped up when Steven Naylor combined with Stuart
Millett to put the Stand Off over.
