Ashton
Bears good early season form continued when they swept aside a strong
St Pats side and at one time lead 38-0, only to ease of the gas in the
late stages. Ashton started strongly and it wasn’t long before the
ball had gone through several pairs of hands, Steve Smith going over to
score in the corner. Dave Picton was the next scorer after some fine
inter passing between himself, Paul Wilde and Danny Parkinson. With the
pressure now mounting on the home team, Stuart Millett produced a
defence splitting pass for man of the match, Peter Shaw to run on to
and score. This was followed immediately after with the try of the
match when the ever busy, Andy Bailey broke his way through home
defence to race seventy yards. Just before half time Steven Naylor was
the recipient of a great flowing move that saw him go over in the
corner.
The second half saw Ashton maintain there superiority and it wasn’t
long before the scoreboard was moving again, this time a quick few
passes from the base of the scrum enabled Steve Smith to score his
second try of the match. A fantastic strong break from Brent Knox
allowed Peter Shaw to bag a brace of tries and with Matty Melling
having another good day with the boot, converting five tries, all is
going well so far this season for the Bears.
Huge
credit must go to Peter Shaw who deservedly won the man of the match
award after his 2 tries and 35 tackles.
