On a very
blustery
Cumbria
day not conducive to the open rugby Ashton have come to play, they had
to show another side of their game and grind what was in the end, a
comfortable win. The home side started much the better and took an
early lead. Ashton hit back shortly after when Steven Naylor eased in
at the corner. Ashton were now starting to play and it wasn’t long
before Steven Naylor took a great ball from Andy Bailey to score his
second try. Just before half time a clever little chip from Stuart
Millett was taken beautifully by the impressive Matty Melling who went
in under the post. He also had another great day with the boot,
converting four of the five tries, in very difficult conditions.
The
second half saw the home side turn on the pressure, aided by a very
strong wind, but with the likes of Peter Shaw, tireless in defence, it
looked as if Ashton would weather the storm. However Walney did manage
to score. This try seemed to lift Ashton and they started to build some
pressure of their own and when, after a fine break and off load by Joey
Burrows, the ball found its way to Steven Naylor who finished well to
make it four consecutive hat tricks in four league matches.
Man of
the match, David Picton, saved the best till last when he darted
through the home defence, beating several players on his way to score a
thoroughly deserved fifty yard try.
