With both teams
looking for their first points of the season it was always going to be
a tough derby encounter between Golborne and Ashton. It was Golborne
who started on the front foot and in the opening twenty minutes opened
up a 16-0 lead. Ashton then started to build some good pressure and it
was on the back of this pressure that loose forward Stuart Millett was
able to ghost his way over the line to score, the ever busy Phil
Schmechel converted. Shortly before half time and in reply to a
Golborne try, Ashton created a good move down the left hand side for
Caine Thompson to score.
The second half started brightly for Ashton when a beautiful cross
field chip from Phil Schmechel was pounced on by Stuart Millett to
claim his second of the game. With man of the match Brent Knox, Scott
Hughes and Keiron Spruce all running and tackling well and Chris
Rothwell distributing the ball it looked like Ashton might turn the
game round, however the injuries were starting to mount up and it was
Golborne who took total control of the match. Ashton’s spirit was
undaunted and they scored the last try of the match when Phil Schmechel
finished of a move down the left hand side.
