A much improved performance from Ashton was still in vain as they just
lost in a thrilling match, 22-28 to surprise top of the league, Rylands
Sharks. Ashton got off to a bad when the visitors scored after five
minutes, however this didn’t deter the Ashton lads and within five
minutes they were level when, following a scrum the ball was moved
swiftly to the wing were Caine Thompson was waiting to score, Phil
Schmechel converted. The try appeared to lift the home side and after a
period of pressure they produced the try of the match when a good ball
from Stuart Millett found Steven Naylor who made ground along the
touchline before off loading to the ever busy Phil Schmechel before
finding man of the match, Chris Rothwell who supported well and touch
down. Just before half time Rylands went back in front with a converted
try.
Right form the start of the second half Stuart Millett made a great
break down the right, unfortunately it came to nothing and to make
things worse, Rylands went down the other end to score. Ashton dug in
again and following some strong defence they forced the error and from
the resulting scrum good quick hands from the impressive Brent Knox and
Andy Ball combined to find Nathan Davies who went over, Phil Schmechel
converted. Ashton were now getting on top and with some strong drives
from Keiron Spruce and Scott Hughes it looked like a matter of time
before they hit the front, alas it was Rylands who scored two quick
tries to lead 28-16. With five minutes left Ashton scored when a superb
inside ball from Andy Ball found Matty Hughes who went over under the
posts, Phil Schmechel converted. However time ran out.
