Ashton Under 17's played
host to Widnes West Bank in what was billed as a top of the table clash
between two unbeaten teams, with West Bank yet to concede a point going
into this game. It was the visitors who started the stronger with an
early try but Ashton replied with a interception try from Andy Ball to
level the scores. Shane Jones converted and then kicked a penalty on
the stroke of half time to make it 8-8.
The first half was
disjointed, marred by the high penalty count and Ashton errors and the
second half continued in much the same way. It was West Bank who broke
the deadlock by taking advantage of some poor tackling from the Bears
to score outwide. The conversion was narrowly missed which turned out
to be crucial later on. Andy Ball the provided Nick Hallas with an inch
perfect kick in the corner which the winger caught to go over
unopposed. Emotions were running high and Ashton had their second
player of the game sin-binned but managed to hang on to win the game
14-12.
In a game that never lived
up to expectations Ashton were happy with the 2 points which made it
five wins out of five for the Bears. Ashton's best players of the
morning were Nathan Davies, Michael Burns, Joe McGinn, Shane Jones and
Andy Ball.
