Ashton u17`s
secured the championship with a convincing 16 - 32 away win at title
rivals Widnes West Bank. The winner of this game was to take the title
and things didn’t start well for Ashton, as the
Widnes
loose forward scored in the opening 10 minutes. From then on the Bears
took full control of the game. Their first try coming from an Andy Ball
crossfield kick, picked up by Nick Hallas who passed inside for the
supporting Ben Robinson to score. Prop Forward Danny Burgan was
next to score crashing through out wide. Ashton’s final try of the
half was scored by Michael Burns with one of his trademark angled runs.
West Bank
managed a try on the stroke of half time to make the score 10-14.
The Bears dominance continued in the second half when
straight after the kick off a set move bamboozled the opposition
defence to give Burgan his second try. Bank managed to get on the
score sheet after four consecutive sets on the Ashton try line. Normal
service was resumed shortly after, when great passing put Robinson
through the gap to get his second. Shane Jones then got in on the act,
diving over from acting half. Danny Oswald scored the final
points of the day to seal a fine win. Jones kicking three
goals.
The Bears produced one of their best performances, to take
the league title, after losing only one match all season. This
was a real team effort but all the pack were outstanding to lay the
foundations for victory. Special mentions go to Burgan, Robinson,
Robert Clark and Joe McGinn.
