Ashton
booked their place in the quarter-final of the Ken Gee cup with a 30-12
win over Orrell St Jame’s just two days after winning the 1st
division title. Orrell took the lead before the Ashton lads got
started. Slowly but surely Ashton started to build the pressure on
their opponents and when the ball was played skilfully by Stuart
Millett then Scott Hughes who put Steve Smith in at the corner. The
momentum was starting to build in Ashton’s favour and the newly
crowned champions were starting to play some champagne rugby, and
following a superb run down the middle from Kevin Howell, Michael Burns
created a try for Matty Melling. Ashton were soon on the score sheet
again when Paul Murphy made a break down the right, the ball was then
kept moving and finally found it’s way to Chris Rothwell to score.
Ashton went further ahead shortly after the break when the
irrepressible Matty Melling broke through the centre of the defence
before off loading to Dave Picton backed up well to score. Orrell
briefly came back with a try, however just when you would have forgiven
Ashton for tiring following their exploits on Tuesday, they seemed to
get their second wind. With Alex Peet and Keiran Spruce marshalling the
forwards, it was left to several of the young lads combining to put Lee
Edwards over in the corner. The match was wrapped up shortly after when
man of the match, Peter Shaw made a fine break down the left, the ball
was moved to Kieran Edwards who in turn passed to big Phil Collier who
crashed over, completing a fine game for himself and the team. Matty
Melling was successful with four conversions.
