Lancashire Cup Final Result...

Ashton Bears 6-23 Bank Quay Bulls

Ashton were defeated by premiership leaders Bank Quay in the Lancashire Cup Final despite a brave effort. In front of a substantial crowd on a wet afternoon, the Bears went down 23-6, with Andy Bailey scoring our only try, which was converted by Matty Melling.

After a tight opening the Bulls opened the scoring on 15 minutes following a superb break by fullback Ryan Fieldhouse after his side had run the ball. He drew the cover before passing inside to second row forward Neil Smith who crashed over for a converted try.

On their next set the Bulls opened up the Bears defence again only for the Bulls to knock on with a clear field ahead. Ashton made them pay for their mistake on 19 minutes following a penalty. Scrum half Dave Picton flicked an inside pass to winger Andrew Bailey to score and fullback Matty Melling, outstanding both in attack and defence added, the extras.

The score remained at six all with both sides playing good football considering the conditions until the 35th minute when the Bulls went in for a try under the posts. The half-time score was 6-12 in favour of Bank Quay.

The Bulls doubled their lead three minutes into the second half after being given a penalty ten meters from the try line on the last tackle. From that, the Bulls took their advantage and after a converted try, marched on to drop a goal 2 in the next set of six. Bank Quay's final try came after an uncharacteristic missed tackle from Matty Melling in defence. The conversion was missed and the final score was Ashton 6-23 Bank Quay.

Post match comments -

Steve Jones (Arker) - "We made too many mistakes and maybe the occasion got to us. We matched them in the pack but they scored from our errors, and we didn’t show enough composure. Perhaps the fact that the Bulls play at a higher intensity, week in, week out, was a factor. I’ve no doubt that if my lads had a similar grounding, we’d have gone much closer."
