Shevington
Sharks 18-46 Ashton Bears
[23rd
February 2008]
Ashton
took on Spring View with what looked to be a depleted side, but it
certainly didn't show as they were 24-0 up after only 20 minutes.
Ashton took the game to the opposition from the off, playing some
tremendous rugby, and the whole teams defence was as solid as ever,
lead by captain Rob Dumbell who also crashed over for a try. Other
tries came from Richard Stazicker who had an outstanding game at centre, Matt
Farrell crashed over off an inside ball, Ben Smith who had an all round
brilliant game, including good goal kicking grabbed a brace, and
so did Phil Ashcroft who controlled the game round the ruck making
several breaks and getting through a lot of good tackling. The game
finished 46-18 with man of the match for Ashton going to
stand-off Wayne Hasleden who attacked the opposition’s
line superbly, creating many gaps and slipping out some brilliant
passes. He also crossed himself for a try and had a good tactical
kicking game. An all round good team performance which all the
lads thoroughly enjoyed!
Ashton
Bears 33-16 Pilkington Rec’s
[2nd
February 2008]
Ashton
Bears secured a sixth impressive win in the first seven games since
their formation over a well drilled and experienced Pilks side.
The
game did not go to plan with Pilks half back scoring an individual try
under the posts after just 3 mins. The doggied determination of
the Bears quickly equalled the score when Paul Murphy demonstrated his
phenomenal pace by scored an outstanding try from his own half.
The first half was played on equal terms with both teams showing great
offence and defence skills and with the score line at 11 - 10, it was
all to play for in the second half.
The
Bears came out with a change to their game plan and from the onset
bossed the half with a flurry of tries from Paul Murphy (hat trick),
Ben Smith and veteran players Archie and Rob Dumbbell! The Bears
go forward was testament to their success with notable yardage made by
Rob Dumbbell (Capt) and Kevin Howells and outstanding play making by
half backs and man of the match, David Aimes and David Smith who
returns after a long absence through injury.
The
strength of Ashton’s ‘A’ team demonstrates the present strength
in depth of the club and with several players pushing for that
lucrative first team call up there is no room for complacency!

Eccleston
Lions 2-18 Ashton Bears
[12th
January 2008]
Another hard
fought win for the newly formed Ashton Bears ‘A’ team against the 5th
division side Eccleston Lions. With only 1 substitute at the
coach Bill Ball’s disposal it was going to be a big ask against the
Lions, a side that are a big set and utilise their narrow pitch to
their advantage. The Lions try line was finally penetrated when
the Bears attacked the blind side to put Richard Stazicker over for the
first try. The Lions bounced back but the defence of the Bears
was up to the task with the Lions finally opting for 2 points rather
than attacking the Bears try line from only 8 metres. The Bears
again capitalised from great ball work from Wayne Haselden and David
Aimes to put Matty Farrell over for their second try. Leading
12-2 at half time the Bears defence was put under extreme pressure but
again proved to be impenetrable! The defence of the Bears pack
was outstanding in particular Rob Dumbell (Capt and Man of the Match)
and Paul Wooley. The Bears sealed the win 15 mins from time when
Wayne put a outstanding pass right into the running line of Ben Smith
to score a 30m solo try, Ben converted his own try to put the game
beyond the Lions reach. A hard fought game, played in great
spirit and sportsmanship. The Bears go on from strength to
strength, the Lions disappointed but upbeat that the 80 mins will stand
them in good stead for their forthcoming fixture in the league.
Latchford
Albion 10-42 Ashton Bears
Another
fine performance from the Bears with tries coming from Phil Collier (2)
Paul Wilde, Richard Staziker, Rob Dumbell, and Paul Murphy. Everyone of
the lads played their part.
Latchford
Albion 12-15 Ashton Bears
Ashton
Bears “A” travelled to
Warrington
to take on an experienced Latchford “A” and came away with an
outstanding win thanks to a Man of the match performance from Kevin
Howells, who seems to be returning to his best after a long lay off. It
was Ashton who got off to a great start when from a play the ball Wayne
Hasleden went over. Ashton increased their lead when the impressive Rob
Dumbell scored following some good work from Phil Ashcroft.
Early in
the second half Ashton went further ahead with a drop goal from the
ever busy David Aimes. Latchford hit back with a try, however winger
Paul Murphy sealed a Bears win with a well taken try, before Latchford
grabbed what was a consolation try.
Spring
View “A” 40-12 Ashton Bears “A”
Ashton Bears 'A' team came up against a well organised and
ultimately more experienced Spring View side and were beaten 40-12. A
much changed side from last week with four 1st team call-up's and a
couple of late cry offs not helping Ashton's cause. After soaking up
some early Spring View pressure, Ashton opened the scoring when
debutant forward Steve Collier shrugged off the attention of 3 would-be
tacklers to score in the corner. Next to cross the line was Phil
Ashcroft, taking a perfectly timed pass from scrum half David Aimes to
score under the posts. This seemed to spring the View into life and
some personnel changes resulted in a period of sustained pressure, with
the Ashton line breached with some well worked moves. The 2nd half
continued in much the same vein with Ashton's defence working hard and
the Bears completed the scoring with another debutant, centre Bill
Ball, collecting a perfectly executed chip from MoM Chris Rothwell to
outstrip the defence in a 40m dash to the line.
Ashton
were best served by half backs Chris Rothwell and David Aimes with
loose forward Kevin Howells never taking a backward step all game. A
good experience for the young Ashton side and a welcome run out for the
Spring View club made it a good day all round.
Walney
Central “A” 6-32 Ashton Bears “A”
Ashton
Bears “A” enjoyed their day out to Walney were they beat a very
good side 32-6. Ashton started well and it wasn’t long before Scott
Hughes opened the scoring and soon after he received a good inside ball
from David Aimes to make
it a double. Ashton were dominating and with powerful performances from
man of the match, Ian Taylor and Kevin Howells, playing his first game
for eight months, it wasn’t long before they stretched their lead.
Paul Murphy was on the
end of some good rugby to score and then big Matty Farrell crashed
over.
Even
playing against the strong wind in the second half, Ashton still
controlled the game and it was a late double from the impressive Danny
Roby that sealed another fine win.
Ashton
Bears “A” 26-18
Wigan
St Cuthberts “A”
What a
historic day for Ashton Bears. Fielding a second team for the very
first time, they beat a very strong St Cuthbert’s team.
Cuthberts started the better and took an early lead. Soon after, Ashton
hit back when full back, Paul Murphy went over after good work from Ian
Taylor and Chris Rothwell. Ashton went further ahead when man of the
match, Scott Hughes scored following fine contributions from Paul
Woolton and Rob Dumbell. Cuthberts hit back. Then the impressive Danny
Roby scored two tries, one either side of a Cuthberts try.
Cuthberts scored first in the second half to make the game tense,
however Ashton dug deep and hooker, Philip Ashcroft went over to win
the match for Ashton. Conversions came from David Aimes (2) and Peter
Mooney. Credit must go to Kevin Howells and Bill Ball for their
commitment in getting the new second team going
