Ashton
Bears 38-0
Wigan St
Patrick's
[Sunday
11th January 2009]
Ashton
hosted St Pats in their first game of 2009. Both teams started
brightly with missed opportunities in the opening minutes for both
teams. Ashton pressured the St Pats line and was eventually
rewarded with a try in the corner by Ashley Gaskell. A close game
continued until an opening on the wing was exploited by Adam Jones,
scoring in the St Pats corner. Adam Peet added the difficult
conversion. It continued to be a close match and just before the
break, Ellis Brown powered over the St Pats line, with another
conversion by Adam Peet giving a 16 - 0 have time score.
St
Pats opened the second half very strongly and were unlucky not to
capitalise on a break from the kick off and then later a knock on
by Ashton gave the away team some excellent field position.
Ashton's defence was outstanding throughout the second half.
Tries for Ashton in the second half come from Adam Jones, Ben
Tootill, Adam Peet and Nick Hazeldon. Adam Peet converted three
of the tries.
No
man of the match was given due to the whole team acting as a unit, with
everyone putting in an excellent display.
Halton
Hornets 20-22 Ashton Bears
[Sunday
16th November 2008]
Ashton got off to the worst
possible start, conceeding 6 points in the opening minutes of the game
after sloppy defence let in the home side under the posts. Ashton
gradually started to get on top and busts from Shaun Parkinson then
Jason Lea set up field position and quick hands saw Adam Jones put Nick
Hazelden in the corner to score. From the kick off scrum half
Kieran Sherratt raced forty yards and another bust from Jack Butters
set up the same play, Peet and Jones again sending in Hazelden for his
second try. Ashton continued to pile on the pressure but it was
the home side who scored on the stroke of half time with a speculative
kick that the Ashton defence failed to deal with and again let in
Hornets under the posts.
The second half saw Ashton score first, another well worked move saw
Kieran Sherratt put Adam Peet into the corner before Peet returned
the compliment, putting Sherratt in at the side of the posts.
Further pressure from Ashton had the home side penned in the left corner
and a pass across the line set up Jason Lea who bulldozed his way over
the line from 12 metres, taking 4 Halton tacklers with him in the
process. Ashton again crossed the whitewash with Danny Prescott but
this time a well disguised hand saw the ball reefed away as the ball
was grounded, knock on being adjudged by the referee. From the
scrum Halton found a break in the defence and raced away to score and a
kick and chase on the last play of the game saw the home side score
again.
Match awards for Ashton went to Adam Peet (coaches award) and man
of the match went to loose forward Ellis Brown for an all round
excellent display in attack and defence.
Ashton
Bears 4 v Orrell St James 30
[Sunday
2nd November 2008]
Ashton
produced a determined effort against their high flying neighbours from
Orrell and made the visitors work hard for a well earned victory.
In
the early exchanges both defences were on top but a lapse from Ashton
saw the visitors brush through some poor tackling to score.
Ashton
hit back with a set play putting Adam Jones in the clear but a great
cover tackle prevented a certain try. Orrell hit back with an
opportunist break racing down the wing to score a great individual
try. Ashton had further chances but great defence held the home
side on the line three times to prevent a score.
The
visitors got off to a perfect start in the second half, scoring in the
first minute. As the game continued Ashton began to tire against
their bigger opponents and the last fifteen minutes saw three further
scores before Ashton gained a consulation try with a dept kick over by
Matthew Smith, Adam Jones raced through to collect the ball and Adam
Peet was on hand to score.
Coaches
award for Ashton went to Adam Jones and man of the match was awarded
to Nick Hazeldon for an outstanding all round display.

Blackbrook
10-12 Ashton Bears
[Sunday
12th October 2008]
Ashton
travelled to local rivals Blackbrook and came away with the points
in what was a close game throughout.
Ashton started brightly and was thwarted twice by some great
tackling, but the pressure eventually told when Matthew Smith gave a
superb wide pass to put Adam Jones into the gap and he raced 60 metres
before stepping around the full back to score. Adam Peet added the
conversion to make it 6 - 0 to the visitors. More Ashton pressure
followed but the Blackbrook defence held firm and gradually the home
side gained the upper hand and a series of handling errors from Ashton
in their own half set up the home side to score out wide. Half
time score 6 - 4 to Ashton.
The second half started as the first with Ashton applying the pressure
and Adam Peet, Jack Butters and Danny Prescott all went close to seal
the game for Ashton. However it was the home side that went in front
when a long kick bounced and hit the upright before landing in the arms
of the loose forward who scored at the side of the post. However
the visitors continued to press and from a turnover deep in their own
half it was massive drives from Kieran Williams and then Jason Lea that
set Ashton up on the Blackbrook try line. Swift hands then saw
the ball go left to right through 5 sets of hands before Ellis
Brown found the gap to score. Adam Peet then kept his nerve to
convert from out wide and secure the points for Ashton.
In an excellent overall display Kieran Williams, playing his first game
for two seasons, took the Coaches Award and Nick Haselden took the Man
of the Match Award.
Wigan St
Judes 20-22 Ashton Bears
[Sunday
21st September 2008]
Newly
promoted Ashton took the points in this highly entertaining local
derby. The home side got the best possible start with a try in
the first minute but the visitors hit back with a swift move across the
field which led to Adam Peet darting in at the corner.
Both
teams had chances to score and it took a great set play by Ashton to
break the deadlock with full back Nick Hazeldon scoring in the corner.
The
second half started as the first half ended with both defences working
overtime. The next score came from a promising move by the home side
who looked likely to score, but an interception and 70 yard dash by Ben
Toothill edged the visitors further in front. Back came Jude’s
and a left to right move resulted in an excellent try in the corner.
An
individual score by Kieran Sherratt, stepping through four tackles
seemed to have settled the result, but two late tries by the home side
and some scrambling defence by the visitors left the result in doubt
until the final whistle.
Man
of the match for Ashton was Kieran Sherratt and the coaches’ award
went to Jack Butchers for a fantastic display amongst the Ashton
forwards.
